Whim Creek, WA, Australia (2008)

Whim Creek is a small town on the North West Coastal Highway midway between Karratha and Port Hedland. It is 1,645 kilometres (1,022 mi) north of Perth. The Whim Creek Hotel is a famous landmark and is renowned as a rest stop, hotel and drinking establishment for the better part of the 20th century. It recently served as an accommodation village for the mine workers who worked at the Whim Creek Copper Mine.  Ref: Wikipedia






Fitzroy Crossing, WA, Australia (2008)

Fitzroy Crossing is a small town in the Kimberley region of  Western Australia, 400 km east of Broome,  300 km west of Halls Creek and approximately 2,500 km north of Perth. (Wikipedia)

This mural was on the side of Tarunda, the supermarket and post office building in the heart of town. It was painted by Mervyn Street, a local Gooniyandi man who grew up working as a drover on Louisa Downs Station. He is also a celebrated artist. Ref: smh.com.au

In July 2009, the supermarket (together with mural) was destroyed by fire.

Roebourne, the oldest town in the north-west of WA, in the State’s remote Pilbara district, 1560km north of Perth. Population ~1400 – more than two thirds of whom are of Aboriginal descent.

Sheffield, TAS, Australia (2008)

Sheffield in northern Tasmania is a mural town. It is a rural hub for the Mount Roland area. The Sheffield area is well known for its high quality butterfat production via diary farming. The first town mural was painted in December 1986. Since then over 47 murals depicting the area's rich history and beautiful natural scenery are painted on walls scattered throughout the town and buildings along the roadside. The murals attract an estimated 120,000 people to the town annually. Ref: Wikipedia


Mendooran, NSW, Australia (2008)

Mendooran (Pop: ~320) is a small country town approximately 350 km west of Sydney.  The town provides free camping for caravans and motor homes and has a very good pub. In the town can be found about 10 colourful murals reflecting scenes from local history and rural life. Murals were painted by former resident, Karin Duce.  The pictures below are part of a very large mural painted on the old Mural Cafe.  It depicts a horse race at the Mendooran Turf Club Races, held annually for the past 150 years.

Kurri Kurri, NSW, Australia (2008)

Kurri Kurri (Aboriginal for 'the very first') is a mural town inland from Newcastle on the NSW mid-coast.

In 2003 the Kurri Kurri (and surrounding towns) 'Towns With Heart' group decided to undertake a ‘Mural Project' with the aim of getting more of the thousands of cars that pass through the towns to stop and see what area has to offer. Kurri Kurri now has over 40 murals showcasing the areas history, heritage and uniqueness.

Halls Creek, WA, Australia (2008)

Halls Creek was the site of Western Australia's first Gold Rush. It is located in the East Kimberly Region of Western Australia. The town is a support centre for remote cattle stations in the area. For tourists it is the only sizeable town for 600 km on the Great Northern Highway. It is a major welfare hub for the local indigenous Jaru (Djar-u) and Kija (gKid-ja) peoples as well as some Tjurabalan peoples from the Great Sandy Desert to the south of the town. Ravenshoe, QLD, Australia (2009)

Ravenshoe (population ~1000) is the highest town in Queensland, with Queensland's highest pub "The Top Pub" and highest railway station. It is on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, 120 kilometres south west of Cairns. Originally a timber town, it's main industries are now tourism, beef and dairy farming. It is surrounded by world heritage listed rainforest, waterfalls, crater lakes, swamps, bush walks and water holes. (Ref: Wikipedia)


Northam, WA, Australia (2008)

Northam is about 100 km east of Perth. On the banks of the Avon River, it is the regional centre of the Avon Valley and Central Wheatbelt. A rich farming area it produces wheat, barley, oats, sheep, wool and cattle.

Concrete, WA, USA (2009)

Concrete is a small town on the North Cascades Scenic Highway and lies at the junction of the Baker and Skagit Rivers (Mount Baker is just to the North). The name comes from it being known as "Cement City" when the Washington Portland Cement Company built a plant in the town.

Walla Walla, WA, USA (2009)

Walla Walla is a Native American name that means "Place of Many Waters". The town is located in the southeastern region of Washington state, just north of the Oregon border. It is a College and University town and it's famous for the Blue Mountains, rolling wheat fields, sweet onions and quality wines.
